Brooklands
Museum, Nov 2010 |

Brooklands - historic motor sport venue (built in 1907 it was the world's first proper race track), and the home of numerous car and aeroplane manufacturers since before the first world war. Now an Aviation and Motorsport Museum, and petty local to me - I'm faintly ashamed I'd not heard about it before now. It's a good day out. The factories got pulled down in 1989 and most of the site was re-developed into industrial and housing estates, but you you can still see the remains of the old banked circuit and some of the original hangers and club house. Plus a lot of old machinery, including a hangar full of engines, a stack of champion sports cars and a selection of old aeroplanes (as well as motorbikes I'm particularly keen on 1914-18 aircraft, and Brooklands was the home of Sopwith, Martinsyde and Vickers). Plus there's a Concorde, the Sultan of Oman's old VC-10 (minus the gold fittings), and the biggest freezer you'll ever see - the 'Stratospere Chamber', designed by Barnes Wallis (of bouncing bomb fame) in 1946. It's also where James May created the biggest slot car race-track in the world, back in 2009. And that Sopwith Camel? It can actually fly! |
